Demographic response to the manipulation of adult females in corn mouse populations Ecología austral
Gómez,María D; Steinmann,Andrea R; Priotto,José W.
Variation in population abundance is a consequence of changes in demographic parameters such as survival and recruitment. These demographic parameters can be affected by intraspecific competition, thus adults may play an important role infl uencing the survival and/or reproduction of juvenile individuals in many species of small mammals. We present an analysis of Calomys musculinus populations using capturemark- recapture models in order to evaluate the effect of female removal on their demography. The study was carried out in four enclosures during two different periods: a reference period and a treatment period, with the removal of adult females. Reference period was analyzed to describe population demography without manipulations. In treatment period,...

DEVELOPMENT AT THE URBAN FRINGE AND BEYOND: IMPACTS ON AGRICULTURE AND RURAL LAND AgEcon
Heimlich, Ralph E.; Anderson, William D..
Land development in the United States is following two routes: expansion of urban areas and large-lot development (greater than 1 acre per house) in rural areas. Urban expansion claimed more than 1 million acres per year between 1960 and 1990, yet is not seen as a threat to most farming, although it may reduce production of some high-value or specialty crops. The consequences of continued large–lot development may be less sanguine, since it consumes much more land per unit of housing than the typical suburb. Controlling growth and planning for it are the domains of State and local governments. The Federal Government may be able to help them in such areas as building capacity to plan and control growth, providing financial incentives for channeling growth...

Dynamics of benthic copepods and other meiofauna in the benthic boundary layer of the deep NW Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Guidi-guilvard, L. D.; Thistle, D.; Khripounoff, Alexis; Gasparini, S..
A continuous high-resolution time-series survey of the hyperbenthic community and local environmental conditions was conducted in the benthic boundary layer (BBL) of the DYFAMED-BENTHOS station (43 degrees 24.61'N, 7 degrees 51.67'E at 2347 in depth in the NW Mediterranean) between January 1996 and April 1998 using bottom-moored sediment traps and a current meter. Sediment traps were set 4 m above the bottom. Hyperbenthos was collected as 'swimmers', i.e. those organisms that are alive when they enter the traps but are not part of the particle flux. Identification of these organisms showed that similar to 90%, were meiobenthic, Copepods dominated and comprised on average 75%, of total swimmers. They were followed by nauplii (12%), annelids (7.8%),...

Food Security Assessment: Why Countries Are at Risk AgEcon
Shapouri, Shahla; Rosen, Stacey L..
Food insecurity in many low-income, developing countries is projected to intensify unless steps are taken to reverse the performance trend of key contributing factors: agricultural productivity, foreign exchange earnings, and population growth. For the poorest countries, an increase in agricultural productivity is the key to improving food security. In these countries, imports play a small role in the domestic food supply because of limited foreign exchange availability. This study evaluates availability and distribution of food and analyzes their trends through 2008 by projecting food gaps to maintain per capita consumption, meet nutritional needs, and fulfill requirements stemming from unequal food distribution.

India’s water future to 2025-2050: business-as-usual scenario and deviations AgEcon
Amarasinghe, Upali A.; Shah, Tushaar; Turral, Hugh; Anand, B.K..
With a rapidly expanding economy many changes are taking place in India today. The business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, which assumes the continuation of current trends of key water demand drivers, will meet the future food demand. However, it leads to a severe regional water crisis by 2050, where many river basins will reach closure, will be physically water-scarce and will have regions with severely overexploited groundwater resources. While the alternative scenarios of water demand show both optimistic and pessimistic water futures, the scenario with additional productivity growth is the most optimistic, with significant scope for reducing future water demand.

Is population growth conducive to the sustainability of cooperation? AgEcon
Stark, Oded; Jakubek, Marcin.
This paper asks whether population growth is conducive to the sustainability of cooperation. A simple model is developed in which farmers who live around a circular lake engage in trade with their adjacent neighbors. The payoffs from this activity are governed by a prisoner’s dilemma “rule of engagement.” Every farmer has one son when the population is not growing, or two sons when it is growing. In the former case, the son takes over the farm when his father dies. In the latter case, one son stays on his father’s farm, whereas the other son settles around another lake, along with the “other” sons of the other farmers. During his childhood, each son observes the strategies and the payoffs of his father and of the trading partners of his father, and...

Major Demographic Changes in Bangladesh and their Socio-economic Correlates: Analysis of Trends AgEcon
Mohammad, Hossain; Tisdell, Clement A..
Catalogues the demographic changes in Bangladesh during the period 1975-2000 and examines how they relate to key socio-economic attributes. Trends are examined in population growth, growth of the working age population, women’s workforce participation, age-dependency ratio, female-male ratio, longevity, fertility, mortality and mean age at first marriage. Bangladesh has made significant breakthroughs in all these areas, a feat not matched by most other South Asian countries, but comparable with the South-East Asia region as whole. The study isolates factors contributing to the changes in each attribute. It assesses the correlation between Bangladesh’s demographic changes and selected socio-economic indicators namely, its per capita GDP, female labour...

Nonmetropolitan Outmigration Counties: Some Are Poor, Many Are Prosperous AgEcon
McGranahan, David A.; Cromartie, John; Wojan, Timothy R..
Population loss through net outmigration is endemic to many rural areas. Over a third of nonmetro counties lost at least 10 percent of their population through net outmigration over 1988-2008. Some of these counties have had very high poverty rates, substantial loss in manufacturing jobs, and high unemployment. Lack of economic opportunity was likely a major factor in their high outmigration. Most high net outmigration counties, however, are relatively prosperous, with low unemployment rates, low high school dropout rates, and average household incomes. For these counties, low population density and less appealing landscapes distinguish them from other nonmetro counties. Both types of outmigration counties stand out on two measures, indicating that...

Reproduction and survival of Muscina stabulans under laboratory conditions Ciência Rural
Krüger,Rodrigo Ferreira; Ribeiro,Paulo Bretanha; Erthal,Simone Giehl; DeSouza,Og.
This is the first published report concerning reproduction and survival using life table analyses of fertility and survival for Muscina stabulans maintained under laboratory conditions with artificial diets. The intrinsic rate of growth, reproduction rate and average generational time were obtained, suggesting a rapid population growth under these rearing conditions. These findings permitted the creation of time models of survival and oviposition, as well as a quantitative estimate of the adaptation capacity of this species.

RESULTS OF THE RURAL CASS COUNTY BUSINESS AND SERVICES PREFERENCE SURVEY AgEcon
Hodur, Nancy M.; Coon, Randal C.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
Changing demographics in rural and urban North Dakota have provided both opportunities and challenges for rural communities. Cass County boasts the state's largest and fastest growing urban center, but the impact of the county's growth extends beyond the Fargo-West Fargo city limits. Towns like Casselton, Horace, and Kindred have experienced substantial changes not only in the number of residents, but also in the composition of households and their business and service needs and preferences. To address these questions, the Rural Cass County Business and Services Preference Survey was designed to identify and quantify residents' perceptions on a variety of issues. This report details respondents' perceptions on quality of life issues, business and...

Revisiting the Environmental and Socioeconomic Effects of Population Growth: a Fundamental but Fading Issue in Modern Scientific, Public, and Political Circles Ecology and Society
Mora, Camilo; Department of Geography, University of Hawaii; cmora@hawaii.edu.
Reversing ongoing declines in human welfare and biodiversity is at the core of human development. Although numerous institutions and avenues are in place to reverse such trends, there seems to be limited consideration of population growth as an ultimate driver. I review recent studies showing how the issue of population growth has been downplayed and trivialized among scientific fields, which may in part account for the reduced public interest in the issue and in turn the limited will for policy action. Different sources of evidence suggest that population growth could fundamentally affect society, nature, and the climate. Although tackling the issue of overpopulation will suffer from major impediments including scientific motivation, public scientific...

Rural America At A Glance, 2009 Edition AgEcon
Kusmin, Lorin D..
Update of an annual series, the 2009 edition of Rural America At A Glance deals with effects of the major recession on rural America. Initially, effects of the recession were mitigated in nonmetro areas by high commodity prices throughout much of 2008, but as the recession deepened, prices fell. Both nonmetro and metro areas experienced rising unemployment as manufacturing and other major employment sectors contracted, and they were similarly affected by the mortgage foreclosure crisis. However, even before the current recession, nonmetro poverty rates had risen in the growth years after the 2001 recession, against the usual trend during a time of economic expansion; the nonmetro poverty rate has exceeded the national poverty rate since 2001. The nonmetro...

Spatial variation in water supply and demand across river basins of India AgEcon
Amarasinghe, Upali A.; Sharma, Bharat R.; Aloysius, Noel; Scott, Christopher A.; Smakhtin, Vladimir U.; de Fraiture, Charlotte.
India is a large country with regional differences in per-capita water supply and demand. Attempts to describe the water situation in India at a national level are often misleading due to the tremendous diversity in the water situation across the country. This Report analyzes the spatial variation of water supply and demand across river basins in India. The study identifies basins that are water-scarce because of inadequate water availability to meet the effective demand. It also identifies issues that are important for estimating the future water demand and for the formation of policy for future water-resources development and management.

The Case of Smallholder Dairying in Eastern Africa AgEcon
Ngigi, Margaret.
Agriculture plays a crucial role in the economy of sub-Saharan Africa. A feature of particular significance about the region is that the majority of households are heavily dependent on agriculture as their major source of livelihood. Smallholder agriculture is the principal producer of staple foods and cash crops, accounting for very large shares of national production and marketed output. For the respective countries, therefore, the performance of smallholder agriculture has crucial implications for the overall economic development process including the alleviation of rural poverty. The demands created by steadily increasing populations, and the pressing need to increase agricultural productivity means that these countries must continuously adopt methods...

The Farmers' Plea to Environmentalists AgEcon
Avery, Dennis T..
This paper critically examines linkages between alternative farming practices and environmental quality. Environmental impacts of high-yield farming are contrasted to those of low-yield farming. Traditional low-yield farming systems, while being promoted by environmental groups, have resulted in massive famine, higher cancer rates, soil erosion, and losses in wildlife habitat. Organic farming and other low-yield systems are land intensive and invade marginal farmland, thereby destroying wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Low-yield farming has not and cannot produce enough food to meet the food needs of the world’s population. By contrast, high-yield farming minimizes land use for food production and increase the availability of land for wildlife habitat...
